Afterschool Art Studies Dubuffet

Artists at Barrow Street Nursery School worked hard on an interesting challenge which had a pretty advanced project to it. They started as always with a little free draw and some calming music by Mozart. Once we were ready to move on, their teacher Jim Sperber turned out the lights and they looked at the work of Jean Dubuffet. They noticed that although much of his work is abstract, there are images of people and animals in the sculptures and paintings as well. They also noticed that Dubuffet used a very restrictive PALETTE. For much of his work he used only black, white, red, and blue. Quite often Dubuffet worked simply in black and white.

The project this week involved making a SCULPTURE out of card stock. They were given 3 strips 8 1/2" x 3" and were to draw an ORGANIC SHAPE on each and then cut them out. Once they completed they then had to figure out a way to cut small slits in these pieces and fit them together in a way to create a BASE for their FREE-STANDING sculpture. Once their base was complete and solid they were given another piece of card stock 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" and asked to draw and cut as many other shapes as we could from this and add these to our sculpture. Once this was complete they could take it all apart and decorate these any way they liked and then re-assemble at home since transport would be hard assembled. Not sure how many of the sculpture elements made it home as some of the artists were disappointed that their sculpture did not free stand very easily!
