20 Over 60 Art Show Opening Reception

On Tuesday, May 14, Greenwich House’s Center on the Square welcomed hundreds of Village residents to the opening reception of Greenwich House’s second annual 20 Over 60 Art Show.

The one-and-a-half-week-long exhibition first began as the 12 Over 50 Art Show in 2008 and was hosted by The Caring Community at 20 Washington Square North. In July 2012, Greenwich House took over operation of this and two other Caring Community Centers in order to prevent closure of three centers. As such, the show was adapted to include 20 artists over the age of 60 from the breadth of Greenwich House’s cultural programs and celebrate the continuity of arts programming in the heart of Greenwich Village. This year, the number of artists expanded to 23.

“The seniors who participate in the show have a long history of arts experience in New York,” explain Aura Levitas and Ingrid Edwards, the show’s founders and curators for the past five years. “We began this show in an effort to highlight the older artists in the city who are exploring new mediums and channels of creativity as they develop and grow both as artists and NYC residents,” the pair chimed. Levitas and Edwards first met while working together as dancers on Broadway, appearing in the first production of Sweethearts together in 1946. Since their initial meeting, the two women’s friendship and artistic abilities have grown and matured for more than a half-century of living in New York.

Many of the show’s participants have been involved in community arts for at least a decade and their submissions provide for an interesting and compelling variety of forms and styles.  All the artwork on display is available for sale, with 40 percent of the proceeds donated to Greenwich House in support of senior arts programming.

Greenwich House offers free admission to the show which runs during standard business hours from May 10 – May 21. To see the list of featured artists or to view pictures from the opening reception, please click here.   Read More»

Greenwich House Donor Recognition

On Wednesday, April 24, some of Greenwich House's top donors turned out for the annual Donor Recognition Reception. Hosted by the Greenwich House Board of Directors at Moore Wine Brothers, the evening featured meaningful conversations with various Greenwich House program directors and highlighted the after-school program, which Greenwich House adopted this past year after the closing of the Children's Aid Society's Philip Coltoff Center. The Stevens family (see the video below) whose children attended Children's Aid Society and are now at Greenwich House, shared their personal story of the impact of the after-school program.  Thank you to everyone who attended and to those of you who contribute throughout the year but were unable to attend. With your support we can continue to serve New Yorkers of all ages with vital programs and services! many thanks to Moore Brothers Wine Company and Neuman's Kitchen Events and Catering for an elegant evening.  Read More»
