Poetry Instructor Celebrates 95th Birthday!

The Judith C. White Senior Center recently welcomed friends, poetry group members, media, and more, for the birthday party of one of its most vibrant and renowned members. Sarah Zenis, who has led the poetry group for more than a decade, celebrated her 95th birthday this January at the Senior Center on Barrow Street in the heart of Greenwich Village.

“I’m so happy to be here, to share with you all in this lifeline,” she mused in an upbeat tone. Referring to the poetry group as a part of “living, hoping, and dreaming,” it quickly became clear that she was not the only one present who felt so strongly.
After Ms. Zenis addressed the group, individual members recited some poems in homage to their leader, reflecting not only on her abilities to inspire them and encourage creativity, but in recognition of her leadership and determination as well. One member spoke specifically about her initiatives to take the group to recite its poetry at outside locations, such as the Home for the Blind and Saint Patrick’s Cathedral.
“We are forever entwined with you as a group and will not have to search poetic heaven after death, as we have found it here in life with you….who leads, guides us and gives her all—our smiling personality called Sarah,” wrote Max Nemerovsky, former NYC Transit System working and member of the Senior Center poetry group for 15 years.
The poetry group meets on Tuesdays from 1:30 – 2:30 PM at the Judith C. White Senior Center and is one of the many classes offered in a rich social calendar at the Center. With hot meals served daily and educational and social activities that provide a network for seniors in the area, the Senior Center has become a pivotal part of the community – and one that celebrates the experiences and lives of its participants. According to Associate Director Jessica Englehart, often the Senior Center serves as a family for many people. It is a home-away-from-home, a sanctuary, or as Ms. Zenis put it, a lifeline.
