Music School Meets Challenge Grant Goal

On June 9th, 2008, Greenwich House board of directors Chair, George Davidson, delivered the news to all those gathered at the Barrow Street Theatre that we had not simply met but surpassed the $300,000 challenge grant goal!

In the spring of 2006, the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust extended a remarkable opportunity to the Music School, a community institution for over 100 years, to raise $300,000 for the Music School’s endowment fund, via a Challenge Grant, which would be matched by the Trust if the funds were raised by December 31, 2008. The total amount raised is just under $400,000 and this was accomplished 6 months in advance of the December 31 deadline.

Since 1971, Greenwich House Music School has been awarded over half a million dollars from the Trust, an unusual but mutually beneficial partnership for 35 years. The Trust will be terminated in 2009 and the challenge grant was issued as a final gift to ensure the future financial stability of a program in which they have so generously invested in over the years.

The Greenwich House Board of Directors and the Music School leadership set to work, creating a plan to raise a total of $300,000, using a variety of methods including individual gifts, foundation grants and special events. The infusion of an additional $600,000 to the endowment will bring the fund to just under $1 million.

The goals for the expanded endowment fund are: 1) To increase the number of scholarships awarded from the current 18 (annually) to an estimated 34 to 40 (combined full and partial), depending on number of eligible students and enrollment capacity; 2) To sustain the current scope of three music education outreach programs and add up to two additional outreach programs in NYC public schools, identified as schools in under-served areas and/or where the music education curriculum has been dramatically reduced or eliminated.

Thanks to the dedication and hard work of many volunteers led by the Music School Advisory Board and special event committees, the Greenwich House Board of Directors, Music School staff, GHMS families and students and the contributed talents of the schools’ instructors, the expanded endowment fund will enrich the lives of thousands more youth in the next hundred years!
