For the third installment of Greenwich House Music School’s acclaimed North River Music series--one of NYC's first concert series devoted to new and experimental music--new music, chamber group loadbang will celebrate the centennial of vital composer John Cage with an evening of some of his most treasured works, as well as the world premiere of composer Randy Gibson’s new piece “Primary Structures I.”

Called "exceedingly inventive" by Time Out New York, loadbang’s unique lung-powered instrumentation (bass, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, baritone voice) and improvisational bent will offer an entirely new perspective on Cage’s works at this special engagement. After years of performing together since the group first formed while at the Manhattan School of Music, they have become renowned for their live performance chemistry; this show will work to explore the edges of instrumental and vocal timbre and technique while blurring the line between composed and extemporaneous music. Composer Randy Gibson is distinguished in his own right for his works with structure, evolutionary compositional models, and improvisation to create enveloping and ritualistic works in just intonation.

Since inception, loadbang’s unusual instrumentality has inspired a diverse array of composer commissions ranging from wordless micro-tonal meditations to broad political satire. In the past three years, loadbang has premiered more than 40 works, including several written by members of the band, and a new arrangement by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang. They also perform works for indeterminate ensemble as well as heavily explore live improvisation. Recent performances include appearances at the Roger Smith Hotel on Talea Ensemble's iNSIDE Out series, a program of all premieres at Issue Project Room, and a performance of Cage's Song Books on the Avant Media Festival. Collectively, loadbang members have collaborated with Philip Glass, Jónsi, Dave Douglas, Wordless Music Orchestra, Argento Chamber Ensemble, Todd Reynolds, Ken Thompson, Brad Lubman, Caleb Burhans, Terry Riley, Clogs, MIVOS , ICE, Signal, and many more.
