David Soo - Branded by Fire

Greenwich House Pottery is pleased to present Branded by Fire – woodfired vessels by artist David Soo. For his first solo exhibition in Greenwich House Pottery’s Storefront Gallery, Soo has created an array of robust and animated vessels that embody his expressionistic affinities.

July 12 - August 9, 2012
Opening Reception: July 21, 4:00 - 6:00 pm

“Having abandoned many of the goals of conventional throwing techniques, I manipulate clay atypically, seeking results that appear created but not contrived. Central to my compositional language is the use of elements such as three-dimensional line and negative space. I am sensitive to both how a sculpture touches the surface it rests on and how it touches the air around it…Each sculpture is part of a language of motion versus tension, of position and posture. With all my work, I am respectful of the voice of the clay, letting form follow material and inspiration.” –David Soo

David Soo began working in clay in 1971 at age 9, and was introduced to Anagama wood firing in 1989. Educated in a Summerhill-style school produced an inherent non-conformity in the way he views the creative process. This perspective paired with influences from his Asian and European heritage has developed David’s work into a synthesis of Abstract Expressionist Art and Pottery. The co-builder of his Anagama kiln, David has had the opportunity to study with respected artists such as Peter Voulkos, James Makins, Lester Polakov and Peter Leventhal. He has exhibited in museums and received a New Jersey Council for the Arts Fellowship for outstanding excellence in ceramic art. Concurrently, Hope Rovelto will be having an exhibition in the Jane Hartsook Gallery.
