The Sound It Out series presents Paraphrase – the iconic avant-jazz trio of saxophonist Tim Berne, double-bassist Drew Gress and drummer Tom Rainey – in its first New York City show in a decade at 8:00 p.m. on January 24, 2013, at the Greenwich House Music School in the West Village. All Music Guide, in a review of the first Paraphrase album, Please Advise, perfectly described the ebb and flow a listener can expect at one of this trio’s fully spontaneous live performances: “moments of tumult, calm, aggression and aching, almost prayer-like reflection.” Berne, Gress & Rainey – kindred spirits as daredevil jazz improvisers – will engage in what The Guardian has called their “uncompromising but accessible free-jazz conversation between equals.”
