Weekly Studio Update for January 14th  Winter Term – Week 1

Studio News
Construction Update

As those of you returning to the studio may have noticed, construction has not sped along as planned. We appreciate your patience and adaptability during this time.

Glaze Grace Period for Fall Term Students
All continuing students must glaze all unfinished fall term bisque in the first two weeks of winter term (January 14 – 27). If you are unable to finish during this time, you must remove all bisqueware as techs will clear the bisque shelves completely on January 28th  to make space for winter term bisque.

Measuring Schedule Update
With the classroom changes, the measuring schedule has also been updated. There will no longer be a measuring station on the ground floor (another incentive to pay for 2 firings on each piece). To simplify the schedule, on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, liaisons will begin all measuring sessions on the 3rd floor and move down through the building to end in slipcasting. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, liaisons will begin measuring in the slipcasting studio and move to the second floor and finish on the third floor.

Happenings
Lindsay Pichaske: Souvenir

The Jane Hartsook Gallery is pleased to present new work by Lindsay Pichaske. Pichaske is known for creating sculptures of animals that blur the line between the real and the fantastic, the animal and the human. Made out of clay and covered with a “skin” of surprising materials like string, sticks, nails, sequins or feathers, Pichaske’s creations ask viewers to reconsider their preconceptions around empathy and sentience. Please join us for the opening reception on Friday January 18th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Pichaske will also be giving an artist talk on January 18 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. The talk is free and open to the public, but space is limited so please register to reserve your seat.

Mark Your Calendars: House Demos and Glaze Clinics
Did you know Greenwich House Pottery offers demos throughout the term to currently registered students? Join us Wednesday, February 6 at 2:45 p.m. with Julie Knight for a House Demo on paper resist using colored slips. To attend, register online or in the liaison office for $5 and bring along a few leatherhard pieces. Next up: the first Glaze Clinics of the term will take place on Friday, February 14th. Meet in the glaze area at 2:30 p.m. with Danny Crump or at 5:30 p.m. with Anjuli Wright. Bring a bisque piece for hands-on help and brush up on your glazing basics. Glaze clinics are free and open to all, just show up!

New Student Information
Welcome to winter term 2019. Your instructor will hand out a pamphlet of important studio basics during the first class. Please read it. Highlights of some important safety and courtesy reminders:

No dry sanding in studios.  Use the spray booth for any dry sanding.
No X-ACTO KNIVES or any tools with removable blades.  They pose too great a safety risk to both students and staff.
No cell phones.  Please turn off phones or set to vibrate and take calls outside, not in the stairwell or hallway.

A Clean Community Studio Is A Happy Community Studio
Clay dust is a health hazard. Make cleaning-as-you-go an essential part of your clay practice. It is very important that you use proper clean up techniques and avoid creating dust. Studio community cleanup reminders have been updated in each studio. We ask that all studio members do their part to leave the studio cleaner than you found it. Each class has a list of cleanup tasks provided with the class roster. Please sign up for a cleaning task; since everyone has a task it becomes a routine. Whether or not students stay for open studio or have to cut out of class early, the last 15 minutes of your work time should be for cleanup.

End of Night Routine
In the evening all chairs should be raised onto tables and stools, pedals and yoga blocks placed on wheels. If you’ve used a wheel, please remember to switch it off before you leave. Help the cleaners to do their job by tucking the studio in for the night. Please also keep an eye on time and make sure you are packed up and out of the studio by closing time each night—do not wait until the last minute to pack and clean up.

Important to Note: Winter Storm Closures
In the event of a winter storm, it is our policy to cancel classes in accordance with the NYC public schools.  If NYC public school classes and/or programs are cancelled, our classes are cancelled and the Pottery will be closed.  This policy holds for daytime, evening and afterschool programs.  Special assessments will be made if a storm occurs on a weekend.  Weather closures are always announced by email, Facebook and on the weather closure options on our phone system (212-242-4106, option 5).  If you hear that NYC public schools are closing, please confirm that we are closed by checking one of those sources.

Hello, Goodbye
Over the interterm break we said goodbye to Britt Moseley who has left in pursuit of other artistic endeavors. Britt was a studio technician for more than 4 years at GHP and we appreciate the hard work he put in over the years. We look forward to welcoming another tech to the team in the coming weeks.
