Classroom structure is specifically organized to allow for a balance of active and quiet times. This balance allows children to have the focus and energy they need to participate fully at all times. Throughout the day, children have the chance to take part in large-group, small-group and individual activities. See a sample class day.
Language and Literacy
The teachers strengthen literacy skills by integrating vocabulary, language development, verbal expression and social interaction throughout the day. Children learn to name and classify shapes, letters and numbers and to cultivate other pre-reading skills during circle time, story time, dramatic play, listening and writing centers.
Library
Our designated library is designed with young children in mind. This special space allows visiting parents, grandparents and children's authors to share their favorite books. Teachers incorporate library time into their classes by working with children to locate and "read" their favorite books!
Service Learning
Barrow Street's service learning curriculum reinforces the values of honesty, responsibility, respect and kindness and allows children to understand how they play a part in making world a better place. In the hope of instilling a life-long habit, our approach to service learning means that children see the adults in their lives, parents and teachers, modeling the way a caring community behaves. Age appropriate service learning projects have included: Trike-a-Thon for St. Judes, Smiles for Seniors coin drive to purchase theater tickets for our senior center, using recycled materials to create jewelry and donating pajamas to children in need. Green Team.
Children learn about the natural world through their interaction with objects, people and other living things. The science activities include cooking, water and air experiments, creating and building inventions, feeding class pets and planting. Children make predictions, explore possibilities and document the results of their experiments. Soon our science curriculum will incorporate our rooftop garden!
Children are exposed to numerical concepts such as patterns, graphs, logical reasoning, number recognition and measurement through exploration of classroom materials. Children work on math activities in small groups and independently while participating in the different learning centers. We also find ways to introduce these skills through daily review of the calendar and attendance, blocks and manipulatives, puzzles and mazes.
Music
Encouraging children to learn through rhythmic movement using their bodies, our music program involves games, singing and playing small percussion instruments, such as drums and bells. Children develop their sensitivity to listening, singing and physical movement by learning new songs and listening to various types of global music.
Art Room
The early childhood program found in Reggio-Emilia, Italy, incorporates
an emphasis on the learning environment, process vs. product,
developmentally appropriate practice, and the importance of the
community of learners. In order to allow children a unique space where they can work on prolonged art investigations, we renovated a dilapidated room on the 6th floor to create a dedicated art room.
Pottery
The Pottery School at Greenwich House, Inc. offers integrates pottery into our students curriculum. Pottery Dave provides hands-on experiences with clay, pottery tools and paints and children are encouraged to learn new skills that allow them to conceive, construct, realize and share artistic ideas with others as they advance at their own pace.
Gym & Track

Each day, the teachers, along with our gym specialist, instruct the children in games and skills during gym time. Children work on gross and fine motor skill development while having fun and developing team-building skills. Our gym equipment allows for obstacle courses, climbing activities and open-ended creative play. The tricycle track provides another outlet for the development of their fine motor skills. In addition, children play with balls, hoops, mats, balance beams and other various forms of equipment.

The American Ballet Theatre conducts workshops for our 3s and 4s classes. The program culminates with a field trip for our students and their families to visit the American Ballet Theatre.
Yoga
Yoga helps children develop better body awareness, self-control, flexibility and coordination. Yoga at an early age
encourages self-esteem with a physical activity that is noncompetitive.
Our rooftop playground features a jungle gym, play house and recently added urban garden! Now not only can our students build and refine their gross motor skills while enjoying fresh air, but they can learn how to grow plants and vegetables!
