THEATER

The Theatre Group is run by arts-and-entertainment lovers always on the alert for special discount ticket opportunities. Our volunteers canvass the city's performing arts companies to secure discounts on tickets to the theater, concerts, dance, cinema and other cultural events. Past visits have included trips to the Metropolitan Opera House, New York State Theater, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Carnegie Hall, Rose Theatre, Avery Fisher Hall, Tribeca Playhouse Center and Madison Square Garden. Participating in these outings is a fantastic way for seniors to socialize and experience some of the most exciting events in New York.

Theatre Group Hours:

POETRY

The Poetry Group at the Senior Center meets twice a month to discuss classic works of poetry and to put pen to paper to write their own. Led by long-time instructor Sarah Zenis, the group provides an outlet for seniors to express their thoughts and feelings and open themselves up to new experiences. The group publishes its work periodically in books that are distributed at the center. Read some examples of the group’s work.

CLASSES

In conjunction with many New York City agencies such as the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and the Parks & Recreation Department, The Center offers a variety of classes including yoga, mid-eastern dance, conversational Italian, music appreciation, brain exercise and much more! View a full schedule of activities. These classes are a great way for seniors to exercise their minds and bodies.

TRIPSTheater trip

Our seniors become tourists in their own city two or three times every month, while they visit the many destinations that make New York City and its surrounding neighborhoods so unique. Museums, art galleries and nearby cities are just some of the locations that members explore.

In addition, thanks to generous support from the DJ MacManus Foundation, members at the center enjoy Eleanor's Outings. These trips feature the amazing fine arts in New York, and include selected excursions to concerts, ballet, Broadway theatre and opera. Tickets are distributed through a special lottery system that ensures equal opportunities for all who are interested in attending. Some recent trips have included: Gypsy at the St. James Theatre, A Man for All Seasons at the American Airlines Theatre, The Magic Flute at the Metropolitan Opera House, Giselle by the American Ballet Theater and Symphony of A Thousand by Gustav Mahler performed by the New York Philharmonic.  Contact the Senior Center for more information or to inquire about availability.

MOVIES

If you're just looking for a place to relax, the Senior Center still has plenty of options for you! Featuring two different film series, one centered around International film the other around Contemporary film, our movies can be the perfect place to relax and unwind and discuss the films with friends.
