Barrow Street Nursery School

Barrow Street Nursery School is a progressive early childhood program for girls and boys ages 19 months through 5 years and 3 months in September. Incorporated within Greenwich House in 2006, it is located in the historic settlement house at 27 Barrow Street, built in 1917.

Barrow Street Nursery School believes the early years are the most productive of a child’s life and we challenge our students to excel in ways that fit their own unique development. Creativity and artistic expression are developed through individual exploration and group collaboration and provides children with the building blocks of knowledge, thinking and reasoning.

Barrow Street believes a solid educational foundation includes learning about character and the community. We reinforce the belief that education promotes responsibility and develops character. Beginning with our youngest students, we emphasize respect, responsibility, honesty, and kindness and actively engage our community in school-wide service learning projects that ensure harmonious continuity between children’s home and school life.

Our programs include Toddlers, 2s/3s, 3s/4s and 4s/5s. (For full program overview, click here.) Early Drop-off (from 8:15 – 9:00 am), Extracurricular Classes (from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 – 5:30 p.m) and a Summer Program are also available. For the 2021-2022 school year, we have 184 students enrolled with 8-15 children per classroom and two to three teachers per class.

Barrow Street Nursery School is committed to creating a community that is racially, ethnically, religiously and economically diverse. Barrow Street admits families of any race, color, religion, sexual orientation, national or ethnic origin. It does not unfairly discriminate in the administration of its educational policies, admissions policies or any other school-administered programs. Approximately 10% of families receive financial assistance.

Along with our eight classrooms, students have access to a rooftop playground and garden complete with irrigation system, full-size gymnasium and tricycle track, art studio, music and movement room, library, material room and meeting space.
