Community Engagement

Incorporating community, promoting responsibility and developing character through service learning, collection drives, and more.

A comprehensive education incorporates community, promotes responsibility, and develops character. Our community engagement curriculum reinforces the values of honesty, responsibility, respect, and kindness. Children learn how they can play a part in making the world a better place.

Admissions

The community engagement program teaches environmental values, encourages healthful habits, and empowers our children to be difference makers in communities both large and small, now and in the future.

Service learning also requires the adults in our community—parents and teachers—to model caring, community-conscious behavior. Parents can participate in workshops, discussions, and community-wide projects while their children learn through conservation-focused lessons and hands-on activities.

We believe. We provide. We incorporate. We accept.

We believe in the power of children to:

  • Impact the world as individuals
  • Empathize with the needs of others
  • Leverage collective strengths to make positive change

We provide children with opportunities to:

  • Take meaningful responsibility in the classroom
  • Help classmates in need
  • Nurture relationships with organizations beyond the classroom

We incorporate eco-friendly initiatives including:

  • Environmentally-conscious curriculum, field trips, and projects
  • Recycling and reuse of home and classroom materials
  • Planting, harvesting, and cooking using our sustainable rooftop garden
  • Taking nature walks through botanical gardens and parks
  • Learning how to bring “waste free” lunches

We expect children to:

  • Grow as compassionate and active agents of change
  • Put the values of empathy and responsibility into action
  • Learn about others and the society we live in
  • Reflect on their own experiences, attitudes, and actions

Past Service Learning Initiatives

Room To Grow
The Room To Grow program provides parenting support and baby items for families in need. Families benefiting from this program will build strategies to promote their child’s development, select baby items for their child, and connect with other local organizations and community resources. The Barrow community has been supporting Room To Grow for several years. In 2022, our community made a donation to the program’s Bronx location of 33 oversized bags filled with much needed items including high quality clothing, books and toys.

Drive for Ukraine
Through the leadership of a valued Barrow Family, we coordinated with the Volyn Regional Charitable foundation, Cooperative Volyn, to provide essential items for Ukraine families, including food, formula, batteries and sleeping bags. We came together as a community on very short notice to collect, pack and ship 144 boxes of desperately needed items directly to the organization in Ukraine for distribution.

Drive for Families of the Bronx Fire
The Barrow community came together to support families victimized by the Bronx Fire. Support included providing essential items for impacted families, diaper donations through @WeAreHerVillage, and financial contributions through the Mayor’s Office.

Bowery Mission
The Bowery Mission has served homeless and hungry New Yorkers since the 1870s, working to address needs, transform lives, and give hope to the hopeless. The Barrow Community assembled toiletry kits to be distributed.

No Kid Hungry
The No Kid Hungry program strives to end child hunger in America today by ensuring that all children get the healthy food they need every day to thrive. Proceeds from our Bake Sale went to this incredible organization.

New York Cares Coat Drive
Our community came together to donate coats to keep our fellow New Yorkers warm during the cold winter months.
